Rain doesn’t dampen spirits on the greens

Kerang Golf

Wow, there has been a lot of rain, with greens in the district flooded each time there was a huge deluge.

However, our social bowls has continued over this wet, festive season, despite missing a couple of days.

On December 21, a game of three bowls triples was played, with one combination who won both games.

This team of Jim and Sonia McLeish and Trevor Linton took home the major prize and the best of the rest were Laurie Gray, Wayne “Tige” Neville and Marlene Rawson who collected the runners-up prize.

Chocolates to Ronnie McKerrow, Trevor Burmeister and Craig Hicks.

We also had a game on the following Saturday and 2-4-2 was the game for eights pairs.

After three games there were two undefeated teams.

Separating them on shots up, found that Frank Ritchie and Rob Fisher came out on top, with Dave King and Robert “Fonzy” Taylor being runners-up.

The chocolates to Peter Niall and Trevor Burmeister. In true Christmas spirit all other players received a sweet treat as well.

On our last Thursday social day for 2023, a small field assembled and played three bowl pairs.

A win and a draw was enough to win the major prize, with Rob “Curly” Curtis and Neil Paul winning on a countback from the “Daves” – Wood and King who were runners-up.

Chocolates to Trevor Burmeister and John Murphy. The first social bowls for 2024 was held last Thursday, with 18 players, including visitors, and a couple of club matches being played.

After two games of three bowl pairs, the winners were Mari Miller and Ray Maddow who amassed 25 shots more than their opponents to win the major prize.

In second place, also with two wins, was the Noel Robertson and “Comeback” Kevin Chase who won their games by 14 shots.

Honourable mention to Lorraine Ritchie and John Murphy for their two wins, but only 7 shots up, so third place was best.

Chocolates to June Maddox and Greg Tate, with no scores to be mentioned.

Members have attended tournaments during the break in Pennant – no success at Wakool, but Frank and Lorraine Ritchie were runners-up in the New Year’s Day Pairs at Pyramid Hill, with Graeme Hayes and Brett Hipworth in third place.

Our annual Australia Day Triples Tournament is coming up on Friday, January 26.

Entries have started coming in, as this is a popular event on the calendar, with the lamb burgers for lunch before an afternoon of three bowl triples.

Contact Aldo (0407 310762) or Frank Ritchie (0409 439029) with your entries or place your name on the entry sheet on the noticeboard.

The Match Committee is pleased to see that all club matches have been completed by the due dates, with the Men’s Club Championship down to the semi-final stage.

Howard McClelland plays Frank

Ritchie and Ritchie Murray plays Ian Charles with the winners playing in the final.

The Ladies final is this coming Thursday, between last year’s winner Carol Pay taking on Marlene Orr.

Spectators are welcome to come along and support.

The Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Memorial Barefoot Bowls is scheduled to commence on the evening of Wednesday, January 17.

Teams are required to make this series a success, so if you are interested in playing, contact either Aldo or Frank or any bowls members for more information.

It is a very social format with a barbecue and bowls and a bit of fun.

Everyone is welcome.
