ON WEDNESDAY the grounds of Kerang Technical High School came alive as the school hosted an ag fair with a focus on careers in the agricultural sector.
Two local primary schools and two other high schools took the opportunity to join the hosts in not only the exhibits but also a friendly ag Olympics.
The relay involved donning personal protective equipment, assembling a swag, carrying hay bales, matching pictures to words and rolling tyres.
Kerang Technical School agriculture teacher Krystal Grills said she had the idea to run a careers expo but not necessarily just related to agriculture.
“We decided to run it as an industry expo so we’ve got automotive people here we have engineering people here as well as all our normal agricultural businesses,” Ms Grills said.
“There is a wide variety of people here, everything from local tractor dealerships to locals with livestock and meat processing companies and some irrigation research companies as well.
“The invitation was sent out to all local high schools to attend but unfortunately on the first planned date there was a lot of rain and it had to be postponed.
“Some of the schools couldn’t make it for the changed date so we have opened it up to local primary schools as well.
“All in all it’s been a great turnout and I’m really grateful to all the exhibitors that have taken time out to come and do this.
“They might get apprentices out of today so it works on both sides of the fence really.
“Although the primary focus is on careers it is also to educate the kids and take the blinkers off that agriculture is such a huge diverse industry, from IT to economics, engineering and sciences for plant breeding and livestock.
“It’s huge really and at the end of the day we have to realise we have an ever-increasing world population and we need to keep feeding it on less and less land and minimal resources so we have to farm a lot smarter so that we can keep eating.”
