Across the Greens – Kerang

THE first semi-final of Midweek Pennant finals were played at Barham on Wednesday.

Kerang had both Division 1 and 2 competing.

In Division 1, Kerang defeated Cohuna by two shots overall (rinks 2/1) in a very closely-fought battle.

Kerang will now go straight into the grand final (March 1) to play the winner of Cohuna and Cohuna Golf which will be played tomorrow at Kerang.

Kerang Division 2 defeated Leitchville by 14 shots (one rink each) to earn the right to play in the preliminary final tomorrow at Kerang. The winner of this match will play Kerang Golf in the grand final.

Congratulations to both teams.

Team for Division 2

Team one – Jackie Jenkins (skip), Eddie Fenton, Marilyn Theobald, Jenny Harrison.

Team two – Jo Adams (skip), David Randell, Denise Frantz, Don Monaghan.

Assemble at 9am, 9.15am roll up, 9.30am start play.

Finals are under way in Midweek Pennant.

Both our divisions managed to get through the semi-finals with Division 2 sharing a rink each with Leitchville.

Jacqui Jenkins’ rink went down 15-18 shots but Jo Adams’ rink got off to a flying start which enabled them to finish strongly winning 27 shots to 10.

Kerang managed to win on shots overall, 42 shots to Leitchville 28 shots. They will play Barham in the preliminary final at Kerang tomorrow.

Division 1 had a great tussle against Cohuna. Helen McBain’s rink had a tough day at the office against Frank Tonne 18-33, Kevin Teasdale’s rink hung on for a 21-18 win and Trevor Pocock’s rink covered the deficit with two shots to spare to secure a spot in the grand final on March 1 at Cohuna Golf.

Division 3 journeyed to Barham to play Kerang Golf in the preliminary final on Saturday morning for an early start under the dome before Divisions 1 and 2 were to play in the afternoon. Jo Adams had a great tussle with Judy McKerrow to score a win 21-20, decided on the last end, as was the contest between Murray Sutherland and Noel Robinson in a tight contest 15-14.

It was very pleasing to see our young boys Axel Hancock and Michael King contributing so well to their respective rinks in a final.

Helen McBain pulled out some great shots to score a few multiples which enabled her rink to win 32 -17 over Rob Malseed and progress to the grand final to be played at Kerang on February 25.

Some great bowling was on display in the Northern District Champion of Champions semi-finals at Kerang on Sunday morning when Barb Williams (Kerang) played Rhonda Ballard (Cohuna) and Kerrie Lolicatto (Wakool) played Jean Fairchild (Barham).

Garry Easton (Cohuna Golf) played Frank Tonn (Cohuna) and Brody Harker (Barham) played Rick Ainsworth (Wakool).

The final was played in the afternoon with Jean Fairchild playing Rhonda Ballard. Rhonda held sway to hold a four-shot lead, 19-15, going into the 22nd end.

Jean rallied to score on five of the last seven ends to take the Champion of Champions title 25-23, congratulations on a great game ladies.

Brody Harker and Frank Tonn played in the final of the men’s event with Brody coming away with the title for this season. Congratulations to all Club Champions who have provided us with displays of great bowling over the past two weeks.

Mawson’s Maulers (with a Waddy “ring-in”) took home the meat packs on Thursday night at Barefoot Bowls.

We have two Thursdays to go in this series and the final night on March 2 will be a charity night when we donate all funds to our hard-working Kerang Progress Association, towards the annual New Year’s Eve party in Atkinson Park.

I am sure you all enjoy those parties so how about coming down to Kerang Bowling Club to participate in the bowls or just buy some raffle tickets to make it a successful fund raiser. Supper will be provided.

Congratulations to Division 3 on reaching the grand final next Saturday after a hard-fought win over Kerang Golf.

Winning every rink would suggest it was an easy win, but two games were won by just one shot. In the end we won by 17 shots, because Helen’s team once again anchored our game with a 15-shot win, due in no small way to two fives which Kerang Golf could not recover from and was pretty much the difference on the day.

Jo’s rink was level on end 21 and Murray’s was down by one shot. While on the overall score we looked relatively safe, there were some great shots to save both games. In the end the score was 68-51 and 12 points to nil.

We now look forward to next Saturday at home where we have two teams competing which is an excellent result for the club. Remember the starting times are staggered in grand finals so make sure if you are playing what time you start.

Black Duck Jackpot 2 Bowl Triples were played played last Tuesday, with 18 bowlers in good conditions.

Two-game winners were K. Teasdale, M. Credlin and A. Fagg on +17. Second game winners were R. Frantz, P. Waters and P. Basile on +12. Jackpot number drawn was +26. Not claimed. Jackpot increases to $336.

To play Black Duck call the club on 5452 1194 by 8.30am for a 9.30am start or, preferably, have your name down on the list on the notice board by the day before.

You should have your name down by now for the club mixed pair’s and men’s 4s. If you haven’t and want to play, organise a team now please. Men’s 4s and mixed pairs entry forms are on the board.

Lots of tournaments coming up so please try to attend some and help make them as successful as possible.

Presidents Handicap, and 100 up for men are to be played by February 27. If you’re in to play organise your game as soon as possible.
