THREE sides reached the preliminary final stage, with one successful, one narrowly beaten, and one yet to play.
Division 1 came from behind to beat Barham by five shots, a great effort with a skipper missing and the match held on the unfamiliar carpeted surface. All three rinks played their part, Gary playing well to restrict his eventual loss to just four, while Harrison (+5) and Jarred (+4) gained the winning credits.
The Bower vouchers went the way of Harrison, Colin, Peter and Jon. A week now to prepare for what will be another epic game against Cohuna.
The twos battled against the odds all day, actually levelling the scores midway through the match. Too many numbers lost over the final five ends saw Barham take the honours, although David Orr, Yvonne Eckhardt, Doug Peace and John Brown did well to win by half a dozen.
A fine season from this team, and an opportunity next year to go a step further.
Our Midweek teams also played at Barham, and were successful in rolling the home side, to enter this week’s prelim at Kerang.
Peter Bibby’s rink set up the day with a 17-shot victory over Jean Fairchild, assisted by a narrow win by Yvonne and a minimal loss to Pat. The game against Cohuna will be tough, but finals always see upsets occur.
The ladies enjoyed a great day last Tuesday, with some hundred-up matches mixed with teams games.
Big winners on the day were Jean, Elizabeth and Lucy. Just about all club games have now been wound up, presentation night being in early March.
Wednesday night finals continued with a great roll-up of players. In the top four Ruff Farrant defeated Gary Valentine, Ken Hocking likewise from Steven Henty. Bottom four wins to George Payne and Max Simmonds with the preliminary finals this week.
Non-finalist players all enjoyed games, with the best on the night being George Payne, Alan Cooke and Elaine Bartram.
No pairs on Thursday due to the heat, we hope to be up and running again this week.
Our champ Gary Easton returned to Kerang for the next part of the champion of champions. He met Frank Tonn in what was one of the best draw bowling exhibitions by two players on record.
Both reached the twenties simultaneously, then went shot for shot until Tonn triumphed 25-23. Well done Gary, he has a spell while Frank takes on Brody Harker (Barham) for the title, won eventually by Brody.
On Sunday evening thanks to Hair and Beauty on George we staged a most successful tournament. Cheryle had attracted a field of 16 teams, with a pleasing aspect being the number of newer bowlers in their ranks.
Winners were Kerang Golf side skipped by Frank Ritchie, with Garry Cooke heading the runners-up. Lots of novelty prizes made for a great evening, after which our wonderful catering ladies turned on a top-notch high tea for all to enjoy. An excellent event and well worth the work undertaken to stage it.
