From floods to bowls

Some farmers have had not such a bad year regarding yield, obviously being those with a bit of high ground.

Some had all their farm covered by water, and they have had the complete opposite.

The local farmers are an innovative and competitive lot and won’t let this beat them.

Allan Fagg has been bowling at the Kerang club for many years, and competed in the Wycheproof Triples along with other local Kevin Teasdale, Tunna Roberts and Tige Neville. They didn’t win it but would have had a good social day for sure.

On the previous Saturday night, Al said that his Kerang Bowling Club team didn’t do too well and came second to the Cohuna Golf team.

Interesting that some of the local roads have been resealed without road repairs being carried out first.

One such place is the ‘dip’ on the highway at the corner near Reedy Lake. For a while, this had a reduce speed sign on it, but now it mustn’t be considered a hazard.

Then there is the road at the Appin South turn-off. Good sections of road have been resealed and this bad section has been left to get worse. Priorities! We must assume that “they” have it under control.

Hope that last Thursday everyone celebrated the day that we acquired our independence from British rule way back on January 26, 1949, and became an independent nation for the first time.

While on that, Daniel Roberts, from Sportspower in Kerang, received his citizenship last Thursday, along with a few others. Congratulations to Daniel and all our new Aussies.

Daniel came to Australia in 2006 with the Barmy Army, the year Warnie reached his 700th wicket, which was also the series we handed the Poms their biggest thrashing.

While working behind the bar in Melbourne, he met his wife Jackie and they both now live in Kerang. Daniel hasn’t hit the cricket field yet as he is a bit concerned about the hot weather. He will have a crack when the family situation allows.

Just heard that old mate Bruce Thompson, from Murrabit, has passed away.

Bruce was a gun footballer with Northcote in the VFL days and also played cricket at Northcote with Bill Lawry.

Bruce and Yvonne came to Murrabit back in the 80s and was a keen member of the local football and cricket clubs.

Best wishes to Yvonne and family.

Caught up with Tunna Roberts in the street the other day, and he had came second in the Kerang Bowling Club Championship again. Nice and consistent Tunna. Probably time you won it again, old friend.

While speaking bowls, it’s interesting with the heat rule. If it’s forecast to be 38 degrees on the Saturday, they will start early. If it’s forecast to be 40, it’s called off. If at any stage the temperature reaches 40, the bowls is to be called off.

You’d think that any keen bowler would hide the gauge.

Funny though, if they started early on the days forecast to be 40, they would have the bowls done and dusted before it reached 40 – or even 38.

Being in fifth position, Kerang Bowling Club needs all bowls matches to be played and won to have a chance to make finals, although they play teams above them. That pesky Cohuna mob are probably on top.

Former hospital dignitary (no, that’s not an exaggeration), Simon Hall, was in town last week and is living the dream out on the farm.

The Pyramid Creek caused a bit of trouble during the floods, and although it’s a bit tough, Simon will fight on.

Poor bloke still supports St Kilda though, and hopes they can progress up the ladder a bit in 2023.

Keep in mind, Simon, us Blues supporters know your troubles.
