Cohuna

HAPPY winners on Tuesday this week were Ann (s), Rodney and Sue.

Rodney Bannister represented our club in the Novice Singles played at Murray Downs last Sunday. He won his first game 21/8 then went on to play in the final.

Rodney won this game 21/12 to become Murray Mallee District Novice Singles champion. Rodney will now go to Mulgrave in February to play in the State Novice finals. Congratulations and good luck in Melbourne, Rodney.

Frank Tonn also played in the 60+ Singles. Frank was narrowly beaten in the semi-final.

Midweek Pennant: Cohuna 1 67/12 defeated Cohuna Golf 50/0. Cohuna 2 58/2 were just beaten by Barham 1 60/10. Cohuna 3 35/0 lost Cohuna Golf 2 43/8.

Friday night was a bumper crowd of 100+ at the “Bollo”. Chicken steaks and schnitzels were the menu for the night. Well done to all the volunteers who handled this large number of visitors. Great to see so many visitors enjoying our excellent greens.

Saturday Pennant: Cohuna 1 58/10 d Leitchville 57/2; Cohuna 2 67/12 d Pyramid Hill 36/0; Cohuna 3A 54/2 lost to Barham 4 63/10; Cohuna 3B 40/2 lost to Kerang 4 65/10.

Sunday was the final of our Club Championship Singles. Frank Tonn played Wayne Brooks and Rhonda Ballard played Judith Hipwell. These two matches were played in great spirit.

Our club champions for 2023 are Frank Tonn and Rhonda Ballard, congratulations to both players.

This Sunday, Alison and Rhonda, Mike and Bob Maud will play in the Regional Pairs Finals at Murray Downs, good luck to both teams. All spectators are most welcome to attend, 10am start. Come along and support our members.

Cohuna Golf

FIRST off results from Monday’s Cohuna Car Sales Triples. A very even field of 14 prevented anyone from winning all three games, so the best two game winners had to be identified.

Winners on 57 were Bruce Morrison, Mick Carmody and Mary Rodwell, just ahead of Col, Tania and Maddy Black in the money for the second week in a row. The lucky draw went Pat Quinn’s way.

Our Tuesday ladies combined triples matches with hundred up games. Best performed were an excited first time skipper in Moss, along with Val and Kath.

Midweek Pennant saw both teams at home, with Division 1 hosting top side Cohuna. All three rinks battled hard, but were surpassed by quite a few shots at match end.

The twos also played a Cohuna side, bowling in inspired fashion to grab a well-deserved victory. Kimmy’s coffee vouchers went to Peter Bibby’s rink.

Wednesday night players attacked the reopening of A Green with gusto on a wonderfully warm evening, with a repeat performance from Ruff, David and Malcolm to snag the trophies.

Only a couple of rounds left before the finals, remembering that we have both a top four and bottom four series. If you’re in the middle you will still get a game.

Thursday pairs continued with a reasonable turnout considering there were Australia Day events on everywhere. Best on the day were Cliff Pearson and Linda McManus, while the repechage vouchers went to Ian Morrison who teamed with Tony Williams. The jackpot number of minus four wasn’t claimed, now up to $40.

Saturday Pennant saw a strong win to Division 1 against Wakool, who were very competitive until midway through the day. Bower vouchers went to the Hammond rink of Jarred, Ian Coates, John Keely and Frank Trezise.

Our twos played each other, and for the best part of the game the supposed underdogs, the Navy group, had the upper hand. Whites however finished strongly to claim a one shot win, despite the great effort of Mal Appleby’s rink which won by 11. David Orr up by nine was the best of the Whites.

The Gunny Golfers put in an improved performance against Kerang, missing out by just five overall. Gary Musgrove was back in form winning his match by eleven shots.

After pennant, players, partners and our Wakool visitors were treated to an amazing luncheon courtesy of Jeff Holloway. We had tasting plates of yabbies, prawns, chicken, duck, fish , rabbit and venison. Thank heavens he left the proposed snake dish at home. Well done and thanks to the ladies who acted as assistants, made salads and cleared up at meals-end.

Kerang Golf

A PLEASANT Saturday morning, contrary to the weather forecast, which said on Thursday evening that the Saturday temperature was going to be 38 degrees.

The Division 1 team travelled to Kerang to take on town rivals, with the end prize the Shannon-Wise Trophy for games between the two clubs. There were also finals berths at stake, so the competition was keen.

Kerang got away to a fast start, leading by as much as 20 shots early on in the game.

To Kerang Golf’s credit, they dug deep and when Frank Ritchie’s rink scored nine shots on his last three ends, to win by six shots, the Golfers had hit the front. Final score Frank 24 to Trevor Pocock 18.

Howard McClelland and Dale Hancock had a close tussle all a morning and a tied result looked on the cards until the last bowl of the match, with “Aldo” ending up a two-shot victor.

Lloyd Murray struggled against Kevin Teasdale and were eight shots in arrears with four ends still to play, after a delayed start. Lloyd’s team won three of those last ends to go down by only four shots and give the Shannon Wise Trophy to Kerang Golf for 2023.

Division 2 played at home, also against town rivals Kerang. However, the result was in Kerang’s favour at the end of play, with only Laurie Gray’s rink winning by four shots, against Edward Fenton.

Carol Pay lost by six to Som Pascoe and Ronnie McKerrow was down 11 to Lindsay Hein.

The Division 3 team had an early departure for their game down at Pyramid Hill. The trip was a bit shorter on the way home as all rinks tasted success.

Judy McKerrow was up by five shots, Gary Borg by nine and the best winning margin for the day was by Rob Malseed’s team with a 16-shot win. Well done to Rob, Marlene Rawson, Mick Fisher and John Duckworth – winners of the Royal Hotel vouchers for this week.

This win sees the Division 3 on top of their division and, with the bye this week, they will stay on top.

The Midweek team had another win, this time against ladder leaders Barham 2.

Again, both rinks won with Judy McKerrow’s team leading all day to record a five-shot win over Carol Gent and Lorraine Ritchie’s rink had a close battle all morning, before eventually winning the last two ends, also for a five-shot success.

Kerang Golf are now on top of the ladder, courtesy this success against Barham 2.

Tomorrow’s teams are Joyce Tuohey, Jim McLeish, Rosie Laughlin and Lorraine Douglass.

Team 2 is Lorraine Ritchie, Sonia McLeish, Marlene Rawson and Allison Medson, playing against Cohuna 3 at Cohuna.

A great day weather-wise for the annual Arnoldt and Greenwood Australia Day Triples last Thursday.

With teams from Marong and Charlton, joining with teams from our own playing area, we had a near-capacity field of 22 combinations, playing on greens that were in good condition.

This Australia Day Triples has been held for many years and the Arnoldt and Greenwood Ford dealership has been associated with it ever since its inception, dating back to the 1960s possibly.

This year, Hayes Real Estate has also assisted with their contribution, allowing all bowlers to enjoy special Australia Day Lamb Burgers before play, and they were delicious – you only had to see the smiles on everyone’s face.

At the completion of the three games we had five three-game winners.

Playing the points system, we had the Kerang combination of Barry Theobald, Trevor Pocock and Ian “Tunna” Roberts win the day with 78 points.

Close behind was the Charlton team of Kevin Willey, Jeff Cox and Dale McCallum with 77 points in second place.

Third place was decided on a countback with 73 points being the scoreline. Som Pascoe, John Pay and Rodney Pascoe collected the spoils with 10 shots up, compared to Cohuna’s Brian Bowles with eight shots up and Marong’s Chris Bramley with seven shots up.

The best last game score was also decided on a countback, with 27 points the winning score and 12 shots up to Peter and Shirley Slingo from Barham and Stuart Robinson (Kerang Golf). Andy Jeffs team also scored 27 points but only won by nine shots, to just miss out.

The afternoon tea snacks were enjoyed by all at greenside gazebo and surrounds to complete a great day for the club.

The second night of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Barefoot bowls was played last Wednesday evening in beautiful warm conditions.

A complete reversal of form for the Spinsky Mac team who won both their games and amassed 31 points to be the night’s winners.

Team members, Dale Spinks, Gary Wishart, Neil Paul and Grant Lewin (a last minute substitute) gladly accepted the Choice Cut Meat vouchers. Grant is Travis Hipworth’s father-in-law and had driven from Merimbula that day and as Dale mentioned – “he was our secret weapon”. Well done.

Runners-up on 30 points was the Hayes Real Estate team of Graeme Hayes, Travis and Brett Hipworth and Dave Wood. The “encouragement” chocolates to the Golfers.

Crackerjacks have moved to the top of the ladder with 49 points, followed by Lake Charm Boat Club on 48, Royal Hotel 43 and Team Fourteen on 42.

Club games continued to be played and the match committee thanks everyone who has played by the due dates. There are a few “stragglers” in the 100 Up and these games must be played on or before Thursday or you know what will happen.

Coming events – Royal Hotel night this Saturday, please put names on board to tell us you are coming. The Mixed Pairs Entry Sheet is on the board as well. This will be held on Monday, February 13, commencing at 6.30pm. The Terry White Triples is also coming up. Thursday, February 16 is the date, so get your teams organised.
