You’re the voice, says Cohuna Progress interim chief

TO have your voice heard and help plan events in Cohuna and district, attend progress association meetings and become a member.

That’s the message from retired businesswoman Wendy McGlone, who was elected Cohuna and District Progress Association caretaker president last week.

It’s been a turbulent year for the association, which was unable to fill any committee positions at the annual general meeting last month.

Members were warned that without active volunteers, the association would go into liquidation.

Following the meeting, members agreed to keep the association active by electing a caretaker committee until positions were filled permanently early next year.

Ms McGlone said every small town needed a collective voice.

“It’s also a voice that gets to the shire, so it’s really important,” she said.

The first meeting of the caretaker committee will be on the third Monday in February.

Ms McGlone said the caretaker committee was in the process of finalising Christmas trading hours, a Christmas raffle and a New Year’s Eve carnival at Garden Park.

“Since what went on social media (about the group’s possible demise), there has been an outcry of interest from people wanting to help out and be on the committee, with some caretaker committee members possibly remaining in those positions into the future,” she said.

“Everyone can have a good idea and want something done, and we have the voice to get it done.

“There are lots of comments that people make, but (they) don’t want to come to meetings.

“We don’t expect locals to attend every single meeting, but if you can’t write a letter to Progress, speak to the relative people.”

Ms McGlone said there had been recent redevelopment works across Cohuna, and that momentum was critical.

“The town is looking like a prosperous destination for holidaymakers.

“We want to keep that attitude happening in the town, but we need the help of townspeople to make things happen.”

Prospective members are encouraged to attend monthly meetings, beginning in February at a venue to be confirmed.

Membership forms will be circulated in January.
