Cohuna Golf
AFTER a worrying weather watch, conditions cleared enabling our pennant bowls season to finally commence on Saturday.
Not the best of starts for Golf sides with only division one scoring winning points, although all other games were very close.
The one’s played Cohuna, and thanks to a big win by the Harrison Keely rink, were able to win the day by some 17 shots.
Both Jarred and Bluey were pipped on the post by one and five respectively, easily covered by Harrison’s plus-23 victory. The first Bower vouchers for the year went to Harrison, Col Barton, Peter Bibby and Jon Henty.
The Whites played Kerang at home with scores see-sawing all day, only to finish with a Kerang victory.
Bruce Morrison’s rink did well winning by seven, but losses by Yvonne (3) and Pat (9) gave Kerang the necessary numbers to win. With a couple of late withdrawals, it was a pretty good effort nevertheless, and they can try their hand on the Barham surface this week.
Navy had their first taste of Barham’s carpeted greens, and did really well against strong opposition. Jeff Holloway gained match points with a four- shot win, whilst Mike Henshaw forced his match into a tie.
Doug Peace was the unlucky one, going down by 11, but they will be more comfortable playing at home next week.
The Gunny Golfers had a great tussle against Leitchville, who had dropped from division two to three, and thus were still a strong unit. Glenn Miller up by three, with both Cheryle Baker and Mal Hogan down by two. The nett result, a loss by just one shot.
Earlier in the week, the ladies social bowls drew a field of 18, with three well-contested matches. Winners on the day were Julie (first trophy), Glenda and Deanne in a good effort.
No play was possible in either the midweek pennant or our Thursday pairs, so hopefully these events can take place this week.
Thanks to those members who represented the club at Wakool on Sunday, well done to the winners from Gunbower. Good luck to those contesting the state singles at our club on Sunday.
Our Friday meal was also abandoned, but will be on this week in barbecue format, rain, hail or shine.
