SPELLING was put the test recently as the Kerang Rotary Club held its first spelling bee since 2019.
Invitations were sent out to all primary schools in the Gannawarra Shire and northern Loddon shire area.
An excited group of Grade 4-6 students hailing from Boort, Cohuna, Kerang, Murrabit and Koondrook took up the invitation.
All students were participating in their first-ever spelling bee as feelings of expectation and nerves filled the air last Monday.
The night would go longer than expected as students performed “superbly” in a close and competitive competition.
Students had to compete in a tiebreaker to determine the winner.
Eventually, three students were crowned champions, with one from each year level.
Bridget Perryman, from Boort District School, was the winner in the Grade 4 competition, with Houssin Sobah (Grade 5) and Claire Rooney (Grade 6), from Cohuna Consolidated School, being the other victors.
The trio were rewarded with a spelling bee trophy and book prize before the night’s highlight occurred when all participants received ice cream and a packet of chips.
