Cohuna Golf
IT was not much of a week for outside activities, but the skies cleared enough for our Jackpot Pairs to be held on Thursday. Our best attendance yet necessitated two greens to be used, with both running well.
There were only two two-game winners, with Mike Hofman and Marion Smith streeting the field to finish 19 shots up. The repecharge poultry went to Laurie Forde and Mary Rodwell who won their last game convincingly by 16.
A few clashes are this coming week, with 60-and-over pairs at Pyramid, and the pro-am golfers to contend with. Nevertheless, we have a solid field already and more names are always welcomed.
Coming up is our opening day on Sunday, when mixed fours is the game with plenty of space for further entries – names to either Cheryle or Peter. There is Barham’s gala opening the following week, along with 60-and-over singles at Cohuna on Thursday.
We have a hit-out planned against Cohuna on the 18th – names to Pat or a selector to help gauge numbers please.
Congratulations to John Brown, who has completed his coaching certificate, and joins Yvonne as the second accredited club coach. As a follow-on, coaching classes are going to be run on Fridays from 4pm to 5pm, a warm welcome to both beginners or playing bowlers who might need a sharpen up.
All pennant draws have been finalised, with the Saturday starting date being October 8. All divisions are playing 14 rounds this year, games being of 21 ends and with no official break.
Kerang Golf
SEPTEMBER has arrived, the Pennant draws have been done, footy finals are on and the sun has started to shine. It must be time to start preparations for our summer sporting pursuit, with the pennant bowls season starting in early October.
At Kerang Golf, social bowls has continued over the winter months, although a lot of our members have been or are still in Queensland. Many thanks to the visitors who have joined our members most days, bolstering the numbers and enjoying their bowls and the camaraderie. Also, with the retirement of our long-time greens curator David Drake, Mick Pors has been employed to do the “heavy lifting” on our greens on a part-time basis. Thanks Drakey for your dedicated service to the golf and bowling club – enjoy your retirement and good luck to Mick on his appointment.
Last Thursday there were 14 bowlers for the regular game and the sun shone for most of the afternoon. It is great to have a few visitors join in and enjoy the greens. Winners were John Duckworth and Rob Malseed, with the runners-up, Barry Theobald and Carol Pay. The much sought-after chocolates went to Laurie Gray, Greg Tate and Ken Pay.
On Sunday, 16 players took part in three-bowl triples in brilliant sunshine, with the green running very well. At the completion, we had four three-game winners, with Bryce McLeish and John Duckworth finishing 22 shots up to take the winner’s prize. Noel Robertson and Aaron Lancaster tied as runners-up with Mick Pors and Allison Medson with 14 shots up. The chocolates were awarded to ‘Fonzy’ Taylor and Rick ‘Tufta’ Newstead.
Social bowls will continue on Thursdays and Sundays (until the footy finishes), with Pennant roll-up and practice, starting on Fridays at 4pm. Membership renewals were sent out at the end of June, so payment is now due.
Sunday, September 11, will be our “official” opening day. This is a club uniform day. Hopefully the club shirts and trousers haven’t shrunk in the wardrobe over winter. It would be great to see a large turnout of members to welcome in the new season. Visitors are most welcome as well. Times are normal – a 1pm start and names in by 12.45pm. Bowls will be followed by the annual general meeting, which will start about 3pm. Members who are unable to attend should let president Gary know. Nominations are being sought for all positions, but there are members who have shown a lot of interest in being part of the administration, so members shouldn’t think they will get dobbed in if they attend.
The captains versus presidents day and the annual practice game against Lake Boga on the Friday, September 23, public holiday will be arranged.
