THE Gannawarra shire’s third all-abilities playground has opened in Kerang, just in time for the warmer weather to attract the town’s young people.
The new Kerang play space follows the successful additions in Cohuna and Koondrook in the past year.
Located at Atkinson Park, the play space complements the popular playground by incorporating elements that people of all abilities can enjoy.
Key features of the play space include in-ground trampolines, a log scramble area, water play areas and a wheelchair accessible sway fun swing.
Meanwhile, construction of the first Changing Places facility in the municipality – to be located at the Atkinson Park toilets – is on track for completion at the end of the month.
Featuring a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, ceiling track hoist system and a peninsular-structured toilet, the space will provide suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
Once completed, Kerang will join more than 200 other towns and cities nationally to feature a Changing Places facility, and will be the first town in north-west Victoria to do so.
Council chief executive Tom O’Reilly said this new facility will enable people to participate more fully in activities and events, and gives families the chance to participate in a family outing, without anyone being excluded.
“These works also include adding a unisex shower and sheltered rest area to the current amenities block, which will enhance facilities currently available to visitors passing through Kerang,” he said.
The new all-abilities playground was supported by a $1 million contribution from the State Government.
