AS the weather cools down, Gannawarra residents have been emitting warmth throughout the community following the success of another winter woollies drive.
Organised by Northern District Community Health, the annual two-week drive encourages residents to donate blankets, doonas, waterproof garments, beanies, jumpers and other winter woollies which are then directed to the region’s charitable organisations for people in need.
NDCH specialist homelessness worker Anna Beamish said the annual drive, now in its fifth year, showcased the generosity of the greater community with drop-off points in Kerang, Cohuna, Boort, Quambatook and Pyramid Hill.
“It encourages people to consider others and it’s been really positive across the region,” Ms Beamish said, noting the Cohuna Waterfront Holiday Park kickstarted the drive, donating more than 50 blankets.
Ms Beamish said donations were back to pre-pandemic levels.
“The last two years have made it difficult for people to donate,” she said.
“Our donations have been similar to years prior to COVID which is really positive.”
She said it was heart-warming to see such generosity with many people in need of a helping hand.
“The pandemic and things around the world are impacting people locally,” Ms Beamish said.
“It’s putting pressure where it isn’t normally, especially with the cost of living.
“The NDCH Winter Woollies Drive is an enjoyable time of year for our team as we can offer more comfort for those seeking warmth.”
Ms Beamish said throughout the year NDCH worked directly with community members who were at risk of being homeless, and urged anyone needing assistance in a time of need to contact the organisation.
