THE Lions Park redevelopment at Gunbower is nearing completion, with the new-look recreational space set to open to the public next month.
The $1 million project has been four years in the making with Campaspe Shire Council first endorsing the project in 2018.
Once complete the redevelopment will feature a natural play space with equipment designed to enhance the natural environment of the Gunbower Creek.
Features include a picnic shelter, barbeque area, a low level bridge crossing and aquatic wetland area with submerged planting.
Accessibility has been at the forefront of the design, with the park set to provide a range of recreational opportunities, including a canoe launching pad with disabled accessibility, a fishing jetting with seating and fishing rod holders and a pram crossing from Gunbower Island Road.
Campaspe Shire Council Mayor Chrissy Weller said the redevelopment of Lions Park was extremely exciting for all involved, with Gunbower residents and the broader community set to benefit.
“Family friendly spaces like this are of great benefit to the health and wellbeing of our residents, as we have seen in recent examples like the development of the Echuca East Precinct and the construction of Rochester’s Wirima in Rotary Park,” Cr Weller said, adding State Government funding had enabled council to finally transform the park into a space where families would want to spend time.
“The fishing jetty and canoe launch is definitely a highlight of this project,” Cr Weller said.
“When you’ve got the beautiful Gunbower Creek right on your doorstep, it only makes sense.”
Catering to families and incorporating the natural beauty of the creek was the central focus of the design.
“Of course, we expect the natural play space to be a big hit with the kids,” Cr Weller said.
“Features such as a log balance play area and climbing ropes will keep those little legs active.
“We can’t wait for Lions Park to open to the public. It is scheduled for completion by the end of June.”
