End of an era for Legacy bowls

Heather Lodge for Kerang Legacy Bowls

We felt that this being our last tournament, it may be revamped in a different way with our new venture, we needed to say thank you to many.

This is our 55th tournament. It was originally started by Legatees of Barham – Frank Sheldrick, Jack Keck, Albert Lyons and Keith Disher, when the soldier settlement opened up at Tullakool, Tulla and Wakool.

They would have five greens full of bowlers, with a bus load coming up from Bendigo.

The men that played in the morning at the golf club would be transported by Bobby Lake to Barham, and would take Barham bowlers out to the golf club.

There were tents surrounding the golf club greens with plenty of food for everyone.

They would have a BBQ with lots of other food besides.

A refreshment tent was always available – leading to this tournament being labelled “legless day”, going on to the early hours of the next day.

Things changed over time, ladies committees started to cater and it was still a very popular tournament.

Digger Hall and Albert Lyons, being legatees, organised this day for many years and when they passed away we felt we would let them down if we never carried on. So we did and we believe it has come time to finish it off.

It’s very hard to get players now as there is too much on and commitment to other things.

Both Wendy and I are passionate about Legacy.

Both Wendy’s mum and dad were in the army with Wendy going on bus trips with the 8th Battalion to help look after the soldiers and wives.

My dad went to the Middle East and New Guinea, came home and drew a farm at Tulla and passed away aged 32, leaving seven kids behind with the oldest 11.

So Legacy was a great support to mum and it is something you don’t forget.

Thank you to Club Barham for donating our prize money every year to our green keepers for our greens and to Spike for helping us with the draw.

We would like to say thank you not only for today but all the years you have always supported our tournament.

For all the business houses in our towns, without your support, our takings would not be what they are today, thank you.

To all our Legatees who have helped thank you but I must give a special thank you to Joan Williams who is in her nineties for all the work she does. If you want to be sure something is done – ask Joan – just amazing!

Special thank you to Wendy for organising this tournament, a job very well done and all our ladies that have bought food – thank you.

Just a big thank you to everyone, all very much appreciated.

Winners: Fay Burmeister, Ross Burmeister, Vickie Burmeister and Richard Burmeister

Runners up: Kate Peace, Rhonda Ballard, Kerry Ballard, Marj Mooney
