THE Kerang Golf Bowls Midweek team moved into the grand final with a comprehensive win against Cohuna at Cohuna Golf last Wednesday.
Lorraine Ritchie’s rink got off to a flying start and led by 10 shots after six ends, holding this advantage until the 16th end when Cohuna starting fighting back. An eventual 8 shot win, 26/18 was a great result.
Joycey Tuohey’s rink started slowly but with some great bowling won numerous ends in a row to go from 4/8 down early, to run away with a 26/15 win.
Final scores were 52 shots to 33. Well done – now a grand final for the second year running, against Kerang this time at Kerang tomorrow.
Supporters are encouraged to attend, with the match commencing at 9.30am.
On our home greens, our Saturday Division 3 team took on Barham 5 in the preliminary final for a spot in the grand final. Unfortunately, a mid-game lapse saw the Kerang Golf team in arrears by some 15 shots overall, after leading over the early ends.
Not to be discounted all Golf’s rinks lifted and with 3 bowls to finish the game were actually in front. A dead draw for shot by the Barham 5 skipper was enough for the Barham team to “limp” over the line by one shot, in a very exciting finish.
Congratulations to the players who represented Kerang Golf over the season, making the finals and getting so close to a grand final berth.
The best performed rink was that of Robert “Fonzy” Taylor, with a 3 shot win, both the Noel Robertson and Judy McKerrow-led rinks were defeated by 2 shots – a very close game in the finish. Barham 5 won 63 shots to 62.
The club thanks all the members who assisted with the setting up, running of and cleaning up when hosting the preliminary finals. The Northern District Playing Area officials were very pleased with what was presented and players congratulated the club on the condition of the greens and the atmosphere in general.
With plenty of gazebos and umbrellas around the perimeter, everyone had a good vantage point in the shade.
Thanks to our neighbour club, Kerang, for the use of their new scoreboards – they certainly stand-out and are easily read from a distance.
The bowling green was a hive of activity, with the Division 1 game between Cohuna and Kerang, going to an extra end play-off to decide the winner, after scores were tied at the regulation 21 ends in each game. Kerang advance to next week’s grand final after winning the play-off ends. Division 2 saw Barham 2 defeat Cohuna 2.
Barefoot Bowls continued last Wednesday evening in warm and pleasant conditions. For the second week in a row, The Lloyds were the winners with 32 points and move to the top of the ladder.
The Choice Cut Meat vouchers will be put to good use, with the 18th birthday of Ian and Andrew. Phil Lloyd and Damien Murray teamed with Ian Charles and Lloyd Murray in the team.
Runners up were the McKnight Bray team of Gary Borg, Jim McLeish, Bryce McLeish and new “recruit”, Greg McNeill. Encouragement chocolates to Aaron Lancaster, Heath O’Brien, Shane Waddingham and Mick Fisher.
The ladder sees The Lloyds on top with 137 points, followed by Hayes Real Estate on 130, Royal Hotel on 111 and Spinksy Mac and McKnight Bray on 89 in equal 4th spot. Two weeks to go until the end of the series and the presentation of the Ian “Squizzy” Taylor Shield for the winning team.
Thursday Social bowls was again enjoyed by those who participated, with a few 100 Up games on as well. The winners were Allison Medson and Howard McClelland with 2 wins and 19 shots up.
The runners-up were Mick Pors, Trevor Burmeister and Sonia McLeish with 2 wins as well, but only 15 shots up. The “encouragement chocolates went to Joyce Tuohey and Marlene Rawson.
Cohuna
TUESDAY winners were Rhonda, Alison Kate/Marj and Bill.
Wednesday saw Cohuna 2 play Pyramid Hill at Cohuna Golf for a place in the grand final.
At the end of the day all rinks up, so a very pleasing result.
It was fantastic to see so many back at the clubhouse after to celebrate.
Thanks for the snacks provided. Best of luck to those playing against Kerang on Wednesday.
All supporters most welcome to come and cheer them on.
Saturday was a disappointing day for the club.
Cohuna 1 had a very tight game and after 63 ends all was square.
Rick did a great job winning the last 7 ends in his match.
A 3 end play-off followed but Cohuna went down by 5 shots.
Top effort, could have gone either way.
Cohuna 2 had a battle on their hands all day. Steve’s rink went down by 12, Colin had a draw and Bryan went down by 5.
Not the result we hoped for, but not good enough on the day.
Thank you to all the people who came to support us.
Jeff Reade and Judy Hipwell played in the second round of their Champion of Champions matches Sunday morning in Kerang.
Unfortunately, Judy was defeated by Yvonne 25/7 and Jeff lost on the last end to Jason Lunghusen 25/23.
Well done to both players. Congratulations to both Yvonne and Jason C of C champions for 2022.

WITH the Ones and Twos already in the grand final, there wasn’t much action around our greens at the weekend, save for a couple of club games.
The ladies had another pleasant Tuesday, and numbers indicated that all find it most enjoyable.
Several pairs continued the Hundred Up competition, whilst the remainder enjoyed pick-up triples.
Best performed were Pat Pollock, Helen Hall and Barb Evans. Secretary Yvonne did us proud in taking the Champion of Champions title on Sunday, defeating Leitchville’s Suzanne Bennet 25-15.
Wednesday night players reached week one of their finals, with first four results showing G. Valentine 16 defeating K. Hocking 15, and K. Currie 18 defeating D. Turnour 16. The Valentine team goes into the grand final in a fortnight, with K. Hocking to play K. Currie in the prelim.
In the second four M. Appleby defeated S. Henty, whilst M. Simmonds beat P. Robinson. Appleby to their grand final whilst Henty plays Simmonds in the prelim.
Winners on the night were M. Appleby, H. Hall and M. Henty, whilst D. Turnour is this week’s duty side.
No Thursday pairs last week, but on again this week for all interested parties. Names in by 11am please.
The social committee is staging a pre-finals tea this Friday for all who wish to take part. $6 and the menu is under tight security. Also after the grand-final on Saturday all are invited back to upstairs at the Tavern for a finger food tea. Names to Mick would be an advantage as numbers are capped.
Good luck to all players at Kerang on Saturday, give it your best shot as always, and hopefully the results will go our way.
