GANNAWARRA Shire residents searched for a hearty breakfast and new citizens to celebrate Australia Day on January 26.
Locals and visitors enjoyed festivities in Cohuna, Kerang, Murrabit, Quambatook, Leitchville and Barham/Koondrook.
With no official Australia Day ambassador visiting the shire this year, it was a hometown feeling with prominent and successful locals delivering speeches on what being Australian meant to them.
Local service groups, including Lions and Rotary were up at dawn preparing a feast of eggs, bacon, sausages, coffee, tea and orange juice.
Gannawarra Shire citizen of the year Ross Bateman was acknowledged at Cohuna’s celebrations.
Lions Club of Cohuna president Norm Walkington presented John Webb with the community service award.
Mr Webb has been involved in the community since moving to the town from Barham, firstly through the football club then lately as a member of the Combined Churches through the Gannawarra Memorial Toy Run and men’s breakfast.
