The staff room at the Kerang Tech High School would be a bit different with the social distancing going on.

I’m sure before the virus hit, there would have been a discussion about the local footy at either David Dickson, Brad Morison or Nathan Henry’s desk.

No footy and 1.5m distancing…. Dicko, Brad and Nats would probably have to get straight to work!

Some of the shire blokes have been doing some kerbing works on the Mitchell and Boundary St corner. Laine Gibbons, Lee Pollock and Sid Robinson have been in the gutter recently, but it’s looking great guys.

Laine and Lee would both be seriously missing footy. Sid gave it away quite a few years ago after a stellar career.

The lay-off from footy will prevent Leitchville-Gunbower’s Lee Pollock from reaching the 600-game mark this year. That’s a bit of exaggerating, but he has played of lot of good footy around the district.

Laine “Turtle” Gibbons has previously coached the Wandella Reserves and captained the Under 17s to a flag. He is known for his speed on the footy field – as his name suggests.

Hopefully all tenders are in for the Exchange Hotel, as tenders closed on May 29.

It will be a great day when we can have a meal and beverage in a local pub without any restrictions.

Although some restrictions have been lifted, the local establishments don’t have big enough dining areas to enable them to serve enough customers to make it worth their while to open.

Pretty close to all local shops are now open in Kerang and Cohuna except for the hotels. Some opening hours have been changed, but that is what we can expect. One local businesswoman said they were “rejigorating” things until they learn more.

There are bound to be changes for the future, so we’ll just have to adapt.

The most important thing is to support all local businesses and traders.

In Barham, the Royal Hotel and cluBarham are now open due to less restrictions in NSW. Of course, some restrictions are still in place, but both establishments have gone through a lot to set themselves up to adhere to all the rules.

Hopefully this long weekend will be a boomer for them.

Keen golfers Ned Pay and Shirley Jenner would be happy that the golf club is now open, so they can go for a hit. Don’t think it is necessarily the golf that they have missed, but the socialising. I’m sure they could have a chat at the prescribed 1.5m distancing required. These two were caught overseas for a while as the world was shutting down due to Covid-19 restrictions. A few quick phone calls, a cancelled flight here and there, and they eventually made it back and quarantined for the prescribed time. One of life’s exciting little sojourns.

Current Wandella Footy Club president Matt “Pav” Messer will be having a much easier 2020 winter than he would have thought. The lack of footy sees Pav have his weekends free. Many years ago, as a youngster full of cheek, he was the official scorer for the Wandella Cricket Club. Ah, the stories we could tell, Pav!

Trevor “Turnip” or “Scruff” Ritchie would be drying his cows off about now. Still milking about 130-odd, Turnip is one dairy farmer who decided not to get big and is doing OK.

He would be another one who is missing the footy.

Named on the back flank for the Murrabit Ones back in the day, he could keep the opposition’s cocky half-forward flanker pretty quiet.
