Rains delay resurfacing

Planned night works to resurface sections of road in Kerang, intended to commence on Tuesday May 5, have been delayed by recent above-average rainfall across Victoria.

The resurfacing of the length of the CBD section of Victoria Street and of Scoresby Street between Fitzroy and Victoria Streets was intended to conclude on Thursday May 7.

When able to proceed, the works will include the laying of new asphalt at the intersections of Victoria and Scoresby Streets, and Fitzroy and Scoresby Streets.

Gannawarra Shire Council CEO Tom O’Reilly highlighted the positive nature of recent heavy rainfall, while outlining its detrimental effect on roadworks, and the local impact of heavy rainfall elsewhere in Victoria.
“Communities across the State are benefiting from the above-average rainfall received so far in 2020, but unfortunately inclement weather impacts on the rollout of road improvement works throughout Victoria,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Works in progress by the contractors employed to undertake these repairs in Kerang have also been impacted by this rainfall, which have to be completed before works within the Gannawarra (Shire) can begin.”

Council stated that parts of Victoria received the average rainfall for the entire month of April in the space of 48 hours.

The planned Kerang roadworks are part of Gannawarra Shire Council’s annual sealed road maintenance program.

It’s not the first time this year that rain has stalled Kerang road improvements, with Kerang’s rainfall directly responsible previously.
The upgrade of the intersection of Scoresby and Victoria Streets, which began in February, was delayed after Kerang received the average March rainfall in the space of 24 hours.

“A holding seal was applied to the road surface at this intersection in mid-March, which reduced the level of dust raised by motorists who use the intersection,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Council will advise residents and business owners impacted by these repairs when these rescheduled works will occur.”
