A CARNIVAL atmosphere will accompany the official opening of the refurbished heart of Kerang’s shopping centre today.

The Victoria Square area has been transformed in a project designed to enhance safe pedestrian movement and a pleasant shopping environment.

Gannawarra mayor, Cr Brian Gibson said that the entire community is welcome to join in the celebrations.

One lucky customer will win $1000 to spend in local stores and children’s entertainment and music will be provided during the afternoon.

The event will commence at 1pm outside the historic Memorial Municipal Chambers in Victoria Square with the formal opening to be undertaken by Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp.

The official opening will be followed by an outdoor afternoon tea.

Cr Gibson said that The Odd Sock Circus will be performing from 3.45pm, followed by the sounds of musician Luke Owens from 4.30pm and tapas tastings on offer between 5pm and 6pm.

The Kerang Carnival Cash will be drawn at 5.30pm.

“I encourage everyone to make a purchase at participating Kerang retailers to receive a free entry ticket into the cash draw,” he said.

“Our traders are holding a market day to showcase all they have to offer so it will be a great day to come down and support them and check out the new-look CBD!”

The renewal and revitalisation of the Victoria Street business precinct between Wellington Street and Scoresby Street received $500,000 funding from the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.

The streetscape now features new lawn and garden areas, shaded seating, a raised road section to slow traffic and landscaping to enhance the historic council chambers, court building and post office.

The seat shelter built in memory of two local soldiers has also been rebuilt and placed in its former position in front of the post office.
