DESPITE winning two of three rinks, Kerang Golf’s winless start to the Northern Valley weekend pennant competition continued at the weekend, with cross-town rivals Kerang claiming a hard-fought seven-shot win.
The Kerang combination of Jason Wilson, Kevin Teasdale, Brian Bowles and David Orr proved too strong for Richard Murray’s quartet, with a 36 shot to 16 win proving the difference.
Wilson’s dominance counteracted the close losses of teammates Adrian Bates and Dale Hancock, who both suffered defeats against Frank Ritchie (27-22) and Dallas Mathers (25-17) respectively.
The 75-68 win moved Kerang 12 points clear of third-placed Barham, who suffered an 11-shot loss to ladder leaders Cohuna Golf on Saturday afternoon.
The reigning Northern District premiers proved too strong on two of the three rinks, with Jarred Hammond’s combination defeating Brody Harker 29 shots to 16, while Rodney Fletcher defeated Mark Quor 27 shots to 19.
Cohuna Golf failed to have everything go their way, however, with Brian Mansbridge claiming a 10-shot win over Harrison Keely to ensure Barham didn’t walk away from the weekend empty handed.
Barham will take on Murray Downs outfit this Saturday that will still be licking their wounds following a heartbreaking four-shot loss to rivals Racecourse in the final match of round 11.
Despite winning two of the three rinks, the Rams were unable to overcome the 23-shot win by Glenn McIntosh’s team, who defeated Garry McCaig 36-13.
Murray Downs’ Josh Thornton defeated Michael Holyoak 34 shots to 20, while Brian Lehmann claimed a five-shot win over Racecourse’s Norm Smith 27-22 in the day’s most entertaining battle.
Fifth-placed Racecourse closed the gap behind fourth-placed Murray Downs to just five points.
