VEHICLES travelling along Kerang’s revamped central business precinct will need to adhere to new speed limits.
As of Monday, Victoria Square became a shared zone for both pedestrians and vehicles, with a 10 kilometre per hour speed limit to be enforced.
Signs promoting the new speed limit and shared space have been erected, replacing the former setup where pedestrians had to give way to vehicles when crossing the road.
“The premise of the shared zone is just as it’s said, a shared zone between traffic and pedestrians,” council’s director of infrastructure services, Geoff Rollinson said.
“The speed limit of 10 kilometres per hour provides safety for pedestrians to cross and gives drivers plenty of notice to see any pedestrians crossing the roadway.”
Local police will enforce the new limits, with the speed limit either side of the redevelopment currently at 40 kilometres per hour until the completion of the $750,000 State Government and shire-funded project.
Final pieces still to be added to the precinct before its opening include the installation of a second set of seats, similar to one installed earlier in the week, and umbrellas that will provide extra shade.
“With the installation of the first seat and the streetscape works almost complete, council asks the community to be aware of the change in speed limit, improving safety for all,” Mr Rollinson said.
