YOUTHFUL initiative has been applauded in the wake of the inaugural ‘Warra Youth Arts Festival.
Four days of events last week involved workshops for painting, technology images, poetry, rap music, an art exhibition, musical writing and an African drumming workshop.
The ‘Warra Youth Arts Festival was an initiative from two local teenagers, Emma Thompson and Carmen Baulch, who organised the events with assistance from Gannawarra Shire Council arts and culture officer Kirsty Orr.
Miss Baulch said the exhibition in Patchell Plaza at Kerang was a chance for the budding artists to learn how to exhibit their work.
“It was a part of the idea that the artists come along and learn how to set up an exhibition,” she said.
“We learned how to follow the conventions of exhibiting and hanging art, and the painting titles at the right heights,” she said.
The exhibition was formally opened by Gannawarra mayor, Cr Brian Gibson.
“It’s my privilege to acknowledge the artwork that’s up here,” he said.
“We’re starting to develop our own [arts] culture and to have the youth take a lead on that is fantastic,” he said.
Cr Lorraine Learmonth also spoke to assembled artists and guests.
“This project has been a long time in the making. Congratulations to the organisers, Emma and Carmen,” she said.
“This festival is a great achievement. I’m very impressed with the variety and quality of work here,” she said.
The exhibition will remain in place until February 6.
