Students step out

STUDENTS have started taking to the pavement as part of Walk to School Month celebrations.

The VicHealth and Gannawarra Shire Council-supported program will see primary school children throughout the municipality walk, ride or scoot to school.

“It’s always great to see children out and about enjoying the sunshine and being active in our communities,” Gannawarra mayor, Cr Brian Gibson said.

“Walking to and from school, or the school bus is a great way for children to get their 60 minutes of recommended physical activity each day and it also helps them to learn while at school.”

A Gannawarra Golden Shoe trophy will be presented at each school for the class with the highest participation rate, with presentations occurring in November.

Meanwhile, Drop Park Walk Active Travel Routes are being trialed at Kerang Primary School, Kerang South Primary School and Leitchville Primary School.

Students and parents can participate in the Drop Park Walk Active Travel Routes near their schools by stopping at the designated areas and walking, riding or scooting the rest of the way to school.

The routes are highlighted by footpath stencils, and include eye-catching feet stencils leading the way to school.

“I encourage community members to join in by getting out and about enjoying the sunshine and being active in our communities,” Cr Gibson said.

“Please watch out for children on our roads and footpaths as they walk, ride or scoot to school, or the school bus.”
