GRFL – Final quarter charge

WANDELLA remains undefeated after four rounds of the Golden Rivers Football League season, but it took an 11-goal to one final quarter to shake off Quambatook.

The Bombers, who are now second on the ladder, went into the final term of the first match of the season at Wandella Recreation Reserve trailing by eight points.

However, the hosts turned the match their way in the final 25 minutes to secure a 56-point win.

Sam Sperling and Bombers coach, Paul Graying led the way in front of goal, kicking four goals each in a match that saw nine Wandella players kick at least one goal.

Wandella held a 26-point lead at quarter time, which remained around the five-goal mark at the main break.

The Saints produced a spirited comeback in the third quarter, led by Tyrone Ross and Ethan Tibbles, who both kicked three goals each for Quambatook.

However, the class of last season’s semi-finalists showed in the final term, setting up a round five showdown against fellow undefeated side, Ultima.

Justin Robinson and Shannon Burton were best on ground for the Bombers, with Chris Varsamakis and Jason Linke standing out for the Saints, who take on Moulamein this weekend.

Swans on the board

MOULAMEIN produced its first win since July 2016, leading throughout the match in a 45-point victory against Macorna.

Led by six goals from Patrick Caldwell and four majors from Ben Booth, the Swans took control of the match in the second half to move to seventh on the ladder.

In what looked to be a shootout earlier in the day, Macorna could not keep pace as new recruit, Max Baldissera and Caldwell led the way in best on ground efforts.

Moulamein held a six-point lead at quarter time, which grew to 21 points at the main break.

Macorna kicked six goals in the third term, but the Swans managed seven goals from 11 scoring shots to increase the lead to 29 points with one quarter remaining.

Former Hay pair, Daniel Edwards (five goals) and Ricki Waters (three goals) stood out for the home side, but lacked enough support to record the club’s first win of the season.

The Swans will look for consecutive wins when the team hosts Quambatook this weekend, with Macorna to travel to Murrabit.

‘Roos spoil Henry’s match

ULTIMA sent a message to the rest of the Golden Rivers Football League competition, producing a 40-point win against defending premiers, Murrabit.

On a day the hosts were celebrating Nathan Henry’s 250th senior match, the Blues could only manage two goals after half-time as the ‘Roos jumped to top spot on the ladder.

Murrabit held a two-point lead at quarter time, before Ultima went into the main break with a nine-point advantage.

Four goals to one in the third quarter increase the visitors’ lead to 28 points, before last season’s grand finalists ran out the match with three goals to one.

Ryan Devereux led the way for the ‘Roos with three majors, with Murrabit coach, Hugh Foott kicking the same number of goals for the hosts.

Joshua Stone and Arnold Kirby were best on ground for Ultima, with Josh Bray and Simon Ettershank playing well for Murrabit.

Murrabit will look to regroup this weekend against Macorna, with Ultima hosting Wandella in the club’s second consecutive top of the table clash.

Heslop’s day out

KAL Heslop dominated for Nullawil in the Maroons’ 195-point demolition of Moulamein.

The key forward booted 13 goals in a game that saw the Hawks restricted to four goals by the final siren.

The Maroons held a 25-point lead at quarter time, before kicking at least nine goals for the remaining three quarters.

Wakool’s four goals came from four individual goalkickers, with the side unable to register a major in the final term.

It was a different situation for the Maroons, who had 11 different goalscorers – eight of who kicked more than one major.

Nathan Leane and Heslop were best on ground for the victors, with Joe Thompson and Craig Battye playing well for the Hawks.

Nullawil will next play on May 20 against Murrabit, with Wakool to host Hay – which had the bye – this weekend.
