Rivers to rise again

COMMUNITY meetings will be held at Kerang and Quambatook today as residents prepare for two major rivers to exceed moderate flood levels in the coming days.

Emergency Management Victoria’s Bendigo Incident Control Centre will host the meetings, occurring at 1.30pm today at Kerang’s Thornely Hall and 4pm at the Quambatook Seniors Hall to provide updates regarding flooding in the area.

Gannawarra Shire Council and Northern District Community Health Service representatives will also be in attendance at the meetings to outline services and assistance available.

One of the wettest Septembers on record, as well as major rainfall in the past week, has seen the Avoca and Loddon rivers exceed minor and moderate flood levels south of the area, with increasing flows moving downstream.

The Avoca River at Quambatook was likely to exceed the minor flood level of two metres yesterday, with a peak of 2.30 metres – 10 centimetres above the moderate flood level – predicted during Sunday and Monday.

The Loddon River at Appin South has exceeded the minor flood level of 2.8 metres and is likely to reach the moderate flood level of 3.1 metres during the weekend.

Downstream, the Loddon River at Kerang’s Patchell Bridge is predicted to exceed the minor flood level of 77.0 metres above sea level during Sunday or Monday.

A number of roads have been closed south of the municipality, with up to date information available at http://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au

Residents are reminded not to walk, ride or drive through floodwater.
