Five decades of social fun

ONE of the district’s major groups for senior residents marked a milestone on Tuesday.

Representatives from groups as far away as Echuca and Mildura helped the Cohuna Senior Citizens celebrate its 50th birthday with afternoon tea.

Benefitting from a Seniors Week performance by James Blundell prior to the event, the group’s meeting room and a second area within the Cohuna Memorial Hall were full as present members reminisced about their time with the group.

Three of the group’s four surviving foundation members – Nessie Harrower, Nancy Henderson and Dot Wren – helped cut a celebratory cake to mark the occasion, with the fourth remaining foundation member, Dorothy Pryor an apology.

“It is just wonderful to see the darlings that were here when it formed back together,” club president, Doris Mathers said.

Formed in 1966, the group currently boasts 16 members, with meetings occurring on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

“We usually bingo, but hopefully with a few more members we will be able to roll the carpet out and play carpet bowls, something we have not been able to do for a few years,” Mrs Mathers said.

Gannawarra mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth congratulated the group on its achievement, encouraging those considering becoming members to join.

“A bit of hard work has gone on to keep the group going for so many years,” she said.

“Clubs do not work unless all members pull together and work together.”
