Local focus for show

AN emphasis on local talents will highlight the 132nd Kerang and District Agricultural Society Show.

The society’s group of dedicated volunteers have started collecting entries at the group’s office, located at Alexandra Park in readiness for the Monday, October 3 and Tuesday, October 4 event.

This year’s event will blend traditional highlights and modern attractions, with new additions aiming to increase crowd numbers.

Gannawarra Shire Council Citizen of the Year, Ken Jenkins will officially open the show, with organisers moving the ceremony to 6.15pm on the Monday night.

“We’ve had a number of brilliant people come up to Kerang and open the show during the last number of years, but we have been disappointed with the lack of people around when the ceremony occurred on the Tuesday afternoon,” agricultural society president, Geoff Davey said.

“There are usually more people around on the Monday night, and we’ve decided to focus on local people.”

Festivities will begin early on the Monday with the judging of the cereal and wool, pavilion section and blood stock classes.

The popular show jumping competiton will occur throughout the day, with the dog show running adjacent to the Kerang Turf Club dining facilities.

The animal nursery, sideshow alley, face painting and Professor Wallace’s puppet show highlight the early evening events, with a new attraction – Text the Bucking Bull – available from 5.30pm for those willing to have a go.

The pet parade will run from 6.30pm, with a motocross display (7.30pm) and the smash-up derby (8.30pm) wrapping up official proceedings on the first day.

Many of the show’s traditional events will occur on the Tuesday, with yard dog trials, pony club competition and the the All Australian Qualifying Holstein Feature Show running throughout Alexandra Park.

There will also be plenty on offer for those visiting, with face painting, Professor Wallace’s puppet show and motocross demonstrations leading up to the judging of the Kerang Show Teenager and subsequent sections at 12.45pm.

The show office will be open today and all of next week from 10am to 4pm, including the AFL Grand Final Eve public holiday.
