KERANG junior basketballer, Sean Hunter has been selected to join the under-14 regional basketball academy.
The St Joseph’s Primary School, Kerang, grade six student, 12, was one of more than 1000 12 and 13-year-old players who attended Basketball Victoria Country’s skills day, held across eight centres in regional Victoria.
Sean will participate in the first of two two-day camps this weekend, occurring at Mildura.
Sean has played for the Kerang Amateur Basketball Association since 2011 and is a member of the School Sports Victoria academy and AFL Central Murray under 13 football academy.
“It was exciting to be chosen. I love playing with my friends and learning new skills,” he said.
“At the skills day we were taught skills and how to put them into play by responding and listening to specific instructions from the coach.”
Sean said the height difference between him and the opponents remained one of the biggest challenges.
At the skills day, athletes received instruction from Victoria Country coaches as part of a program set by high performance coach, Justin Schueller.
Following the completion of the skills day, athletes were selected into the Basketball Victoria Country’s regional academy, a 20-week program to be held at Swan Hill that will deliver intense training.
The second skills camps will be held in Echuca later in the year.
A further selection occurs at regional level in the final camp. Those selected are able to attend the Gold Nugget Camp in September.
