QUAMBATOOK has used imagination and its Mallee roots to put its iconic silos back into the picture.
The Quambatook Community Development Association partnered with the Gannawarra Youth Council to host its premiere outdoor cinema experience to celebrate National Youth Week.
More than 50 people, many travelling from surrounding farming districts, gathered beneath the towering silos to launch a new tradition.
Quambatook Development Committee member, Laura O’Dwyer said organisers were pleased with the crowd who watched the 1986 British- American adventure musical fantasy film, Labyrinth.
Entry and face painting was free, with the Quambatook Men’s Shed putting on a barbecue and association selling popcorn and drinks.
“We’d like to thank the Foundation For Rural and Regional Renewal for assisting us with obtaining a grant through the Small Grants for Rural Communities program in order to purchase the projector,” Ms O’Dwyer said.
“The people who attended all seemed to love it and many said they will be back for future movies.
“We are hoping to make this an ongoing event, possibly four times a year. Due to the cost of licencing films, future events won’t be free of charge unless we can get sponsorship so we need as much support as possible to make this viable.”
Ms O’Dwyer said suggestions for future movies include the Harry Potter series, a girls’ pyjama night watching ‘chick flicks’ and continuing with the 80s movie theme.
