Swim under lights

THE Kerang Swimming Club hosted its inaugural twilight carnival on Friday.

Close to 30 competitors took to the water under lights as part of this season’s carnival of events.

The night saw six-year-old James Williamson and seven-year-old Isobel Billing compete in their first carnival.

Fellow six and seven-year-old age group competitors, Brylee Clingan, Annabelle Williamson, James Williamson and Ayla McGowan combined to finish second in the eight years and under freestyle relay.

It was also a big night for Annabelle Williamson, who finished second in the 50-metre breaststroke in a personal best time, as well as recording third place finishes in the 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle.

Nine and 10-year-old age group competitors, Abigail Tilley, Cooper Meehan and Brodie Meehan swam in their first carnival, tackling the 50-metre breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle events.

Kaylee Shipp won the nine and 10-year-old 50-metre breaststroke event, with Cody Makehan winning the 200-metre open breaststroke event, a well as finishing second in the 50-metre breaststroke and freestyle events.

Fellow club members Jasmine Bortolotto, Hannah Gardiner, Grace Hall, Jye McGowan, Molly McGowan recorded personal best times in their events.

Kaylee Shipp, Cody Makehan, Jye McGowan and Tyler Meehan finished second in the nine and 10-year-old freestyle relay.

In the 11 and 12-year-old section, Madeleine McGowan came second in the 200-metre open freestyle and third in the open 100-metre backstroke, whilst Isla Pertzel broke two personal bests in her events.

Sam McGowan dominated in the 13 and 14-year-old section, winning the individual medley, 100-metre butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle, as well as the 50-metre butterfly and breaststroke.

Same also finished third in the individual medley, before teaming up with Maddison McGowan, Madeleine McGowan and Demby Makeham to win the 13 and 14-year-old medley relay.

Maddison McGowan – who also competed in the 13 and 14-year-old section, won the 100-metre backstroke and freestyle, as well as finishing second in the 50-metre butterfly, backstroke and freestyle.

Teammate, Demby Makeham finished second in the 13 and 14-year-old 100-metre breaststroke and third in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Jack Powell won the 15 and 16-year-old boys 100-metre breaststroke and freestyle events, as well as finishing second in the 200-metre freestyle.

Fellow 15 and 16-year-old age group competitor, Adam Gardiner won his 50-metre backstroke and freestyle events, as well as finished second in the 50-metre butterfly, whilst Emily Bortolotto recorded a five-second personal best time in the 16 and 16-year-old 50-metre freestyle.

The club’s president, Paul McGowan praised the number of supporters who witnessed the club’s carnival under lights.

“The meet must work on a Friday night because it has been an awesome family atmosphere,” he said.

“We have about 120 swimmers at the club this year with many involved in the popular Learn to Swim program.”
