Quintessential light opera arrives in Quambatook

A NEW production with lavish new sets and striking costumes will hit the Quambatook Memorial Hall on February 19, with production company Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria (GSOV) preparing to head north with The Gondoliers.

Set in Venice, and a balmy isle in the Mediterranean, this is the quintessential light opera of mixed-up babies at birth, set to “the happiest music ever written by an Englishman”.

Cachucha, fandango, bolero, Sullivan was truly inspired to write such delicious Italian and Spanish melodies; Gilbert’s satire of Republicanism is still as fresh today as ever: “When everyone is somebody then no one’s anybody.”

Marco and Giuseppe have just married their sweethearts Gianetta and Tessa, who they won in a game of blindman’s bluff.

On their wedding night, however, the Grand Inquisitor informs them that one of them is the rightful King of Barataria.

Furthermore, he, whoever he is, was married in infancy to Casilda – the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro – who have just arrived in Venice to claim their daughter’s husband. Libretto by WS Gilbert, music by Arthur Sullivan.

Starring veterans of stage Ron Pidcock and Lynlee Williams as well as up-and-coming classically-trained young talent, Laura Slavin, Emilie Washington, Stephen Carolane, Daniel Felton, Isabelle Mazzarella, Andrew Alesi, Ian Lowe and Marisa Panzarin.

Also featuring members of the society: Anna Castle, Lauren Ryan-Green, Nadia Migliardi, Kevin Yap, Eddy Burger, Sam Hargreaves, Jamie Tampion, James Douglas and Paul Tooby.

With the GSOV chorus and accompanied by Geoffrey Urquhart.

Curtain up at 8pm. Tickets at the door, from 7pm.

Tickets cost $30 and includes a light supper provided in individual packs.
