Mallee landscapes a picture worthy of art

SHOWCASING the nature wonders of the Gannawarra region is what the Golden River Artists have captured in their new exhibition displayed at the Sir John Gorton Library.

The Flora, Fauna and Landscapes of the Region exhibition features more than 35 art and photographic works created by members of the group.

The idea for the theme came from the Living World Festival of Light that was held a few weeks ago in Kerang, where a number of artists also had their work displayed.

Ballarat Arts Society president Jon Lam, who is the former president of the Whitehorse Arts Society, officially opened the exhibition on August 19.

Mr Lam commended the artists on the particularly standard of work that was presented, and noted that there was empirical evidence that art was very important to communities both socially and economically, and gives the community a sense of pride and achievement.

Artists who work is featured in the exhibition include Heather Stanmore, Pam Moore, Jill Swifte, Sandra Neivandt, Anne Grogan, Lesa McKenzie, Ross Pascoe and Brian Duffy.

Another highlight of evening was the three life memberships to president Pam Moore and committee members Heather Stanmore and Jill Swifte.

Secretary Sandra Neivandt said all three new life members were surprised and elated with the presentation.

“All three ladies have given exemplary service, holding executive and committee positions for many years,” Ms Neivandt said.

“It is their dedication to the arts and this group that has seen them receive the honour of life membership.”

Ms Neivandt, who presented the life memberships, thanked Ms Moore, Ms Stanmore and Ms Swifte for their 20-plus years of membership with Golden Rivers Artists, and thanked them for their passion and dedication not only to art, but to keep the group flourishing.

Ms Moore said the life membership was a wonderful honour for something that has been her life’s pleasure, while Ms Swift said she was stunned at humbled to receive the award, as was Ms Stanmore.

“Art has been wonderful for my self-esteem and I really value the friendships made as a result of this, so this award is very special,” Ms Stanmore said.

The Flora, Fauna and Landscapes of the Region exhibition will continue to be on display at the Sir John Gorton Library until September 23.
