Here comes the fun

Kerang will be rocking to some of The Beatles’ classic tunes this Saturday, to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC).

Hosted by the Kerang Bowling Club, the band Glass and a Half will cover some groovy throwbacks.

Event organiser Beverley Goggin told The Gannawarra Times that the band is generously taking a pay cut to ensure maximum funds go to the PMCC.

“The band are doing a deal – they usually take $2,500 but are only doing this for $1,000, which is really nice of them,” she said.

“They’re called Glass and a Half because the lead guitarist is about six-and-a-half feet, and the drummer is only a little bloke.

“I’m looking forward to them – I’ve seen some videos and they are great and create a fantastic atmosphere.”

A good crowd is already expected, but Mrs Goggin is hoping for even more.

“We’re trying to get more numbers in – we’ve got about 55 at the moment,” she said.

“People are coming from Ballarat, Tooleybuc, Swan Hill and Echuca, so that’s great.

“We aren’t sure how much we will raise, but we just want people to come and buy as many raffle tickets as possible.”

The issue of cancer hits close to home for Mrs Goggin, with four of her five sisters-in-law succumbing to the insidious disease.

“My husband Ken had five sisters, and I was good friends with one of them (Norma), and that’s how I met him,” she said.

“Four of his five sisters have passed away because of cancer – Ken and his sister Velma are the only two left, so I thought enough is enough, and we need to do something about it.

“We asked the PMCC if we could raise funds for them, and they sent us a letter saying that we’re an official fundraiser and that they’d be proud to be the beneficiaries.”

Mr and Mrs Goggin have been hard at work selling raffle tickets and gathering prizes for the big night.

“Ken has been down the main street selling raffle tickets, and I’ve walked all over town to collect the prizes, which totals about $750,” Mrs Goggin said.

“We’ve got a pendant worth $130 from the jewellers, a big hamper from Terry White Pharmacy and much more.”

The IBIS Caravan Park in Kerang is sponsoring the event and is providing free accommodation to the artists.
