Orchestra visit a smash-hit

KERANG hosted the Victorian State Concert Orchestra (VSCO) on Sunday at Kerang Memorial Hall as a combined Gannawarra Shire Council and the Kerang Musical Society event.

The hall echoed with the sounds of 45 musicians and two soloists, soprano Veronica Iredale and tenor Nicholas Matters with the entire ensemble under the direction of conductor Gerald Keuneman OAM at the sold-out concert.

Performing all over regional Victoria, the group has a mandate to provide high-quality light entertainment that’s accessible and affordable, especially to those Victorians in rural and regional areas that have suffered from natural disasters.

Gannawarra Council CEO Geoff Rollinson said the VSCO had been performing across the state for close to 100 years.

“The council is pleased to have partnered with the Kerang Music Society to bring this talented group to the Gannawarra,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Gerald Keuneman has performed with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, Anthony Warlow and Sammy Davis Jr and guides the current incarnation of the orchestra through classics and contemporary pieces.

“It does not matter whether you are a fan of Bach, Mozart and Tchaikovsky or musical theatre, the Victorian State Concert Orchestra caters for all interests.”

The recital was funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) as part of the Gannawarra Community Flood Recovery Program.

Kerang Music Society member Angela Ginnivan said the audience of more than 200 people were delighted with the wonderful performance under the masterful baton of Keuneman.

“He (Keuneman) and the soloists also provided generous and insightful background to each item,” Ms Ginnivan said.

“There were many highlights.

“The afternoon was a celebration of fine music and community.”
