THE growing trend of Mallee towns painting disused grain silos isn’t something Quambatook is keen to follow as it continues its unique initiative.
The transformation of silos into a big movie screen continues on Saturday when The Man from Snowy River is projected.
Quambatook Community Development Association president Chelle Espange said while other rural towns had made their mark by painting silos, Quambatook was renowned for lighting up its silos to screen beloved Australian movies.
“This unique event has become a must-see on many bucket lists, drawing attendees from all corners of Australia for its biannual screenings,” Ms Espange said.
The Man from Snowy River is directed by George Miller and features Tom Burlinson, Kirk Douglas and Sigrid Thornton.
“We’ve wanted to screen The Man from Snowy River since we started,” Ms Espange said.
“This time we let our patrons vote on social media, and I was thrilled when this film won.
“It’s got everything – action, romance, breathtaking Aussie scenery and horses.”
But the fun won’t stop at the cinema.
Quambatook is gearing up for the Quambatook Show, from 9am to 4pm on Saturday in the hall, featuring local photography, crafts, flowers, crops and fleeces.
The Men’s Shed and Heritage Working Machinery Association will have displays, and a car boot sale will be held under the peppercorn trees on Quambatook’s main street.
“We’re excited to welcome back our regulars and meet new visitors from near and far,” Ms Espange said.
“Pre-screening entertainment will include a whip-cracking contest and delicious food from local not-for-profit groups.”
Gates open at 7pm, with the screening starting at sunset about 8.30pm.
Enjoy a variety of food and drinks for sale on site, including hot potatoes, barbecue and waffles. Don’t forget to bring your own chairs and blankets – costumes are optional but encouraged.
