Deb ball tradition continues

A SOCIAL tradition will continue at Kerang next week when six young couples make their formal social debut at Kerang Memorial Hall.

The 83rd debutante ball to be presented by the Kerang District Agricultural Society will be held on Friday, May 17.

Six young ladies and their partners will be presented to their guests for the evening – the 2018/19 Victorian Agricultural Show’s Junior Rural Ambassador, Chloe Bowles, and the society president, John Poole, and his wife, Sue.

The theme for the evening is “rustic”. Music for the evening will be provided by local band Endangered Species.

The debutantes and their partners have been practicing their presentation dances under the guidance and training by Libby and Andrew McIntosh over the past 10 weeks.

They have also been supported by three young local women who are past debutantes, Jorja McDonald, Tarnia Shepard and Sarah Jane Carmichael.

The history of debutante balls goes back to Old England when aristocrats’ daughters were presented to their local society in the hope a suitable husband of similar standing would be found.

Tickets for the ball, available at the door, are $25 for adults (15 years and over), $10 for school children under 15 and free for pre-school children.

They include an old fashioned country supper prepared by the society’s ladies committee.
