THERE has been an influx of families enjoying Cohuna’s new all-abilities playground, with the majority of the new facility open to the public since late December.
Developed as part of the $3.4 million Cohuna CBD and waterfront connections project, the playground celebrates Cohuna’s rich links to Gunbower Creek and the agriculture sector in a manner which people of all abilities can enjoy.
“It has been fantastic to see the influx of families enjoying this new space,” Gannawarra Shire Council chief executive officer Tom O’Reilly said.
“The construction of the Cohuna all abilities play space is part of council’s commitment to adapt playgrounds to be inclusive spaces for children of all abilities, which encourages more social interaction and adoption of active living within families.”
Key features of the playground, designed following extensive community engagement conducted in 2020, include water play elements, a three-storey play area designed as an old farm shack, climbing areas and flying fox, all located along a pathway that replicates the Gunbower Creek.
“Unfortunately due to circumstances outside of council’s control, climbing equipment elements and section of fencing are yet to be received and installed,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“The areas where these items are to be installed remain closed at this time, however, thanks to the commitment of all involved in the project, the majority of the park was opened to the public in time for the busy holiday period.
“Council looks forward to the community embracing the playground in the same way Cohuna Beach and other improvements around Apex Park have been in the past 12 months.”
