Health benefits in a long ride

PEDAL power is set to benefit Kerang District Health following the success of the Murray to Moyne cycling event at the weekend.

Thirteen riders and two support crew, representing the Loddon Murray Cycling Club, took part in the team relay event, clocking up more than 300km as they cycled from Echuca to Port Fairy.

This year marked the 27th year that the Kerang based team has taken part in the fundraiser, which aims to raise money for hospitals, health services and health-related charities.

President of the Loddon Murray Cycling Club Brent McKnight said the group raised $8000 for the hospital last year and was hoping to match or exceed that target this year.

“The Loddon Murray Cycling Club is a Kerang-based club made up of many different ages, abilities and walks of life,” Mr McKnight said.

He said this year’s team comprised school teachers, farmers and accountants.

“We all have one common goal and that is to raise money for our hospital,” Mr McKnight said.

This year’s route took riders on a picturesque journey through Pyramid Hill, Boort, Charlton, St Arnaud, Stawell, Pomonal, Dunkeld and Hamilton, before reaching the Port Fairy destination.

Mr McKnight said he enjoyed the challenge of the Murray to Moyne, while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

“I enjoy the camaraderie,” he said.

“You get to see a bit of different countryside and it’s also a personal achievement.”

This year’s funds will go towards buying pressure relieving mattresses for aged or palliative care patients.

While the ride took place at the weekend, Mr McKnight said it wasn’t too late to donate by buying a raffle ticket at Kerang District Health or McKnight & Bray Building Design.

Mr McKnight also encouraged locals to consider signing up for the challenge next year.

“We’re always looking to recruit new riders and it’s something you can tick off your bucket list,” he said.
