LARGE crowds gathered across the shire yesterday to mark Anzac Day commemoration services.
Young and old united, taking time to reflect and honour the spirit of Australia’s service men and women.
While this year marked 107 years since Australian and New Zealand troops made their first landing at Gallipoli, the services provided an opportunity for those present to reflect on all Australians who have served and continue to serve in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
Kerang and District RSL president Bob Sutterby said it was humbling to see the younger generation attend both the dawn and mid-morning service.
“We were proud of the number of younger Australians at the services, reflecting on the sacrifice of the Anzacs and what it means to be Australian,” Mr Sutterby said.
“It is an important task the RSL holds to pass on the importance of remembering the sacrifice of those before us, so that we can avoid such widespread tragedy from happening again in the future.”
Cohuna was also well represented at both services, with crowds spilling out onto the street for the mid-morning march and service.
President of the Cohuna/Leitchville RSL sub-branch Geoff Dale said it was great to see so many people join together, noting the remarkable turnout by the schools.
The newly finished mural at Memorial Park provided the perfect backdrop for the commemoration ceremony which paid homage and honoured the values of those who served and continue to serve today.
