History preserved in Kerang

HISTORY has been preserved at some of Kerang’s oldest and most famous landmarks.

The Kerang Rotary Club has successfully driven a push to insert plaques on six special buildings in the town.

The Royal Hotel, Gilbert Club Hotel, Commercial Hotel, Kerang Hotel, Franzini’s Garage and Arnoltd and Greenwood were the six chosen.

“We were talking at the Rotary Club one night and said there’s a lot of older buildings around the town,” club member Ross Frantz said.

“So what we thought is we’d all walk around, chose 100 sites and got it down to 40, then again down to 10.

“We applied for a grant from the shire and it was only enough for six.”

The process included permission from building owners.

“The thing about them was we had to go and see the owners to see if they were happy,” Mr Frantz said.

“Then we went back again to see if they were ok with what we had written because once it’s on the plaque, it doesn’t come off.

“It’s been a long process because of COVID and it probably took a bit longer than what it should.”

The funds for the plaques were raised in conjunction by the Rotary Club and Gannawarra Shire Council.

Mr Frantz said the club would be attempting the project again to erect plaques on more buildings.

“It’s just about having a process. We probably want to do six plaques every 12 months,” Mr Frantz said.

The Exchange Hotel is the only pub yet to receive a plaque and is one location Mr. Frantz and the club are planning for the next addition.
