Elegance fills the Memorial Hall

EIGHT debutantes and their partners were presented to the community on June 24 at Cohuna’s annual debutante ball.

Held at the Cohuna Memorial Hall, the group danced to Black Coffee, The Way You Make Me Feel, and I’ve Had the Time of My Life in front of more than 250 family and friends.

They trained for more than 10 weeks with the help of dance teachers John Hawken and Joanne Dehne.

The ball is held in partnership with Cohuna Neighbourhood House and Cohuna Secondary College, and is put together by a small group of volunteers.

After 10 years, this group has decided to hand over the organising reins.

Cathy Donehue, Sharon Payne, Mandy Frisby and Sallie Hawken feel now is the right time for some fresh enthusiasm.

“It is such an important event for the young people of our community, and we have enjoyed watching each group over the years, however, we also know that it’s time for some fresh eyes,” Ms Hawken said.

“We know the event will continue and are sure that the new committee will be amazing.”

The ladies thanked everyone for their support and particularly thanked the young people for their involvement.

“Finishing with this small group has been simply lovely,” Ms Hawken said.

“They are such a beautiful group of young people, and it has been a pleasure spending time with them every week.”

Cohuna Secondary College principal Fiona Miller said young people were fortunate to have community members who have a love of dance, skilled in this art form and willingly give their time up to train.
