Winners and grinners

WHILE the mercury soared well into the 30s, it didn’t deter too many people from having a fun day out at the Kerang Boxing Day Races.

Despite a few minor hiccups on the day, Kerang Turf Club president Darren Connelly told the Gannawarra Times it was still a great local event.

“All the jockeys and everyone seemed happy. I went around and asked them if they had any complaints or anything and they all seemed happy, so you can’t do any more than that,” he said.

Around 1200 people attended the race meet, including some representatives from Country Racing Victoria.

“They said it was a credit to us the way we got through the day and everything,” Mr Connelly said.

This year’s races also marked 20 years of sponsorship by Auto Pro Kerang – a huge milestone for both the Kerang Turf Club and Auto Pro Kerang owners Bruce and Nola Wright.

“I mainly just did it for our family and friends at the start,” Mr Wright said.

“But as it went on, you realise that you are doing it for the community and you just try and do your bit, and if you enjoy something you just keep doing it don’t you.”

The occasion was recognised with a cake and celebration at the races.

“You don’t do it for the recognition, you do it because you like it and you are doing your part for the community,” he said.

“I hope we can keep the races going, whoever goes always has a great day.”

Mr Wright said Auto Pro’s sponsorship of the races will “absolutely” continue in the years to come.

“We thank everyone for the support and I hope everyone continues to support the local township in what they do with putting things on for the town and making sure they all support it,” he said.

Mr Connelly also thanked all of the sponsors of the day and the Kerang Turf Club committee.
