Christians gather for solemn day

CHRISTIAN churches in Kerang will combine to mark Good Friday in Atkinson Park.

The observance of the Stations of the Cross will replicate the events of one of the most solemn days on the Christian calendar when Jesus Christ was forced to carry his own cross before being crucified.

Fourteen stations that represent the events leading up to Christ being nailed to a cross will be observed in the park over an hour from 10am before morning tea of hot cross buns and tea or coffee.

Two days later, on Easter Sunday, all churches will celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead.

The observance begins with a focus on Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, then his betrayal by Judas, before he is denied by Peter and judged by Pilate.

Jesus’ journey to his death included being mocked and crowned by thorns before he takes up his cross and struggles with the weight of the cross on his way to the crucifixion site.

Each of the 14 stations involves a scripture reading, reflection and prayer.

Any interested citizen or visitor is welcome to join local Christians on this observance.
