‘Paws’ for thought as Spike the Surfing Dog checks out library

SPIKE the Surfing Dog is set to make waves in Kerang this school holiday, as part of the library’s Author Talks series.

Spike and his owner, Robert Lorenzon will be at Sir John Gorton Library from 2pm, July 3, to speak about their journey together.

Spike is the star of his very own children’s book, “Spike Surfs”, which explores his travels from being found by Lorenzon in the Lost Dogs’ Home to his 2018 surfing glory.

Taking part in the 2018 Australian Dog Surfing Championship, Spike won the Best Wave Award, one of the top honours at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

The story is written from the perspective of the Kelpie cross Rhodesian-Ridgeback, with 50 per cent of the book’s royalties donated to the Lost Dogs’ Home.

Gannawarra Shire Council chief executive officer Geoff Rollinson said he was inspired by the chemistry between Spike and Lorenzon.

“The relationship between Rob and Spike is inspiring,” he said. “It shows how hope and devotion can blossom when the chemistry is right.

“The Gannawarra Library Service is renowned for its Author Talks series, with this session to cater for families with Robert and Spike’s inspiring story.

Part of the Gannawarra Shire Council’s Creative Outreach Program, the library services Author Talk Sessions have been a hit for the council and library.

Mr Rollinson said he expects high demand for this special session.

“Places for this special event will fill fast, so families are encouraged to book their spot as soon as possible,” he said.

While Spike Surfs is aimed at children between four and eight years old, the session is sure to delight the whole family.

Those interested in attending the event or looking for further information are asked to contact the Gannawarra Library Service on (03) 5452 1546.
