Kids get fired up

PARKS Victoria rangers have taken the fire awareness message to the young at Apex Park in Cohuna.

As a part of the Junior Rangers program last week, the youngsters learnt about the role rangers and forest firefighters play in fighting bushfires.

They also gained an insight into how fires are managed in our parks and how native flora and fauna adapt to deal with fire and recover after fires.

Parks Victoria community engagement ranger Lil Waters said the free school holiday program was part of a series.

“We do programs about fire, we do programs about our rivers and our forests.

“The idea is to get the kids out and into the environment to have a bit of fun and learn something in the process.

“Today our fire session was about having a safe campfire, making sure it’s out before you leave a campsite and the role our forest firefighters play,” Ms Waters said.

Jesse Bryant, 11, and his family made the trip from Echuca and he said that he learnt a lot of things from the session.

“I enjoyed using the fire hose very much, even though I got my hands wet as I was changing the hose settings,” Jesse said with a big smile.
