Super day of community activities

THIS Sunday in Quambatook is set to be a super day out of community activities.

The Super Sunday is thanks to flood-relief funding from Neighbourhood House Victoria, National Centre for Farmer Health and Gannawarra Shire.

The day will begin at 10am with a bus tour of the Avoca River, with Quambatook’s local river warden.

Quambatook Community Resource Centre coordinator Annie Meadows said the day started to help answer local questions on flooding.

“People have a lot of questions about where the water comes from and how they measure it,” she said.

“We thought it would be a good thing to get our local river warden, Leo Parker to take people around and have a look at some significant parts of the waterway.

“We received some flood recovery funding, so we decided to run a few events and combine them with taking our bus out to have a look around the river.”

Ms Meadows said the day grew from being just the river tour, to give a chance for community members to socialise.

“We thought it would be a fun thing to do,” she said. “With the plan to have a barbecue afterwards.

“With it being close to the one-year anniversary of Quambatook Football club’s final home game, we decided to promote it as a chance to get the Saints back together and catch up.

“We were really conscious of the impact of losing a sporting club.

“We didn’t want people to feel like they had lost that connection altogether.

“We’ve really tried to have things on for when people would have normally been meeting up at the football, which provided such a strong social connection to the town and the community.

“The bowls club has been really active, putting on extra things throughout the winter.

“It’s given people a place to go and a chance to meet people and socialise, which is great.”

Ms Meadows said community spirit was integral to the success of small towns.

“Social connection is vital in small towns,” she said.

“You’ve got to have those gathering points and nice things to gather for and to have a bit of fun.

“We want to make this a really good, easy opportunity for people to come together and catch up.

“It’s vital, because otherwise people may be going months without getting a chance to see one another.”

Tickets for Quambatook’s Super Sunday events can be found online at humanitix, or at the Quambatook Community Resource Centre.
