Kerang Rotary powers ahead with new president

Karen Davey has been elected as the president of Rotary Kerang and is looking forward to another year of Rotarians helping in their local community.

A member of Rotary for eight years, she was drawn to the service club by a desire to serve the community.

The ethos of Rotary is to make communities’ lives better in all areas such as health, education and social welfare.

The international organisation also looks at the world community with large-scale projects such as eradicating polio, with only two countries in the world still having the disease present.

“On a local level we do things such as prepare meals for the local high school,” Ms Davey said.

“We conduct the local art show that raises funds that we inject back into the community.

“Some of the projects that these funds have been used for include restoring historic seats in the street and upgrades in the park such as the barbecue.

“We try to make our communities better off.

“Funds are donated towards food relief programs for the local neighborhood house; we also run spelling competitions for the youth.

“There is also the schoolies alternative program so that when Year 12s finish their exams they can go away on an experience to serve another community that is less fortunate than they are rather than head to the Gold Coast and get up to mischief.

“We feel that is constructive and helps them develop leadership skills and helps them appreciate what they have in life in Australia.”

The club has 23 members and, like most volunteer organisations, could use new members to carry on its good work.
