No to domestic violence

MORE than 40 people took part in the Kerang Walk Against Family Violence on Saturday, November 29.

Gannawarra Shire mayor Ross Stanton led the way as they set out from Victoria Square walking to Atkinson Park.

Karen Davey represented the Kerang Rotary Club, and board member and Councillor Jane Ogden, Northern District Community Health.

The international campaign calls for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

The family friendly event was launched in Melbourne in 2009 by a group of individuals and community groups passionate about raising awareness of family violence and its impact on society.

According to the Crime Statistics Agency, police attend one family violence incident every six minutes in Victoria.

Gannawarra Council sources state that the family violence rate across the Shire is twice the Victorian average, with women making up the majority of cases. There are also a concerning number of incidents with a child, or children, recorded as a witness.
