New RSL President for Cohuna

The Cohuna-Leitchville RSL sub branch has a new president, Trevor Powis, to lead the active club of 94 members.

A resident of the Cohuna area for 16 years, he became a member of the sub branch shortly after he arrived.

This was the first time he had ever joined an RSL sub branch after one of the local Vietnam veterans visited and asked him to join up.

An ex-serviceman, Trevor Powis was drafted into National Service in February 1966 at the age of 19.

A professional industrial photographer and graduate of RMIT in civilian life, his talents and skills were well received in the army where he was given many assignments utilising these skills, including a stint photographing jeeps being launched from a Hercules C130 while he was strapped to the ramp of another Hercules C130.

Mr Powis said that although he didn’t serve in Vietnam, his two years of National Service was a good experience.

“Although there has often been talk about the rivalry between army regulars and national service men, that was just friendly ribbing,” Mr Powis said.

“The regulars were glad to have us there and we were proud to be doing our part and doing a duty for the country. “

One of the goals of the incoming president is to continue growing club membership and create interest in the functions that they run.

Sub branch members are not required to have military service and can join as affiliate members.
