Cohuna Show’s focus on youth

THE Annual Cohuna Show will mark its 110th year of bringing fun and community spirit to locals.

The show will run on Friday March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at the Cohuna Recreation Reserve.

Organiser Giorgi Boucher said it would be a weekend of local food, drink and entertainment and agriculture as the show has been meticulously planned for months.

“It was a team effort to organise, as planning is all year-round,” Ms Boucher said.

“Friday night would be the biggest and best night to be there.”

A unique attraction of the night is the duck drop where the prize is $1000.

“There will be 96 squares selling for $20 each. Then we’ll let three ducks out and whichever square they poop on first, is the winner,” Ms Boucher said.

Saturday is when farming and agriculture will take full spotlight, featuring horse and dog shows, as well as the the district Holstein Feature Show with cattle.

One of Ms Boucher’s favourites of the whole show, The Young Farmers challenge, showcases young farming talent from the community.

“It’s something that Agricultural Shows Australia introduced to really get those young people involved in the agricultural scene,” Ms Boucher said.

The young farmers are asked to complete various challenges in the fastest possible time.

“Last year, we had challenges like rolling up a swag, neatly stacking five hay-bales, flipping a tractor tyre back to the starting line, and the challenges change every year.”

Ms Boucher said that she is excited for the challenges this year.

In high school, she became involved in Beef Cattle Showmanship and owns a stud farm, as well as a free range egg farm.

“I’m a farm girl at heart,” she said.

Ms Boucher said it’s important for young people to be leaders of the next generation’s agricultural movement.

“We’d really like to build the Cohuna Show back up to an agricultural show that young people will love, and can be excited about.”

“We try really hard to make sure that most aspects of the town are showcased on the day and we know that there’s heaps of talent in the shadows that can be shown to our community through the show.”

“And we would really just love the opportunity to say ‘hey, this is Cohuna, this is what we’re really excited about, come and check it out’.”

Tickets for the Cohuna Show can be purchased at www.cohunashow.com.au and at the entry gate.

Online Adult Early Bird, $20 (only until 10pm, 14 March), adult (at gate), $25, pensioners, $10, children 17 and under are free.
